A well known go-to snack during Deepavali! Muruku originated from Southern India, where its name was derived from the term ‘twisted’ in the Indian language – Tamil. It is famously consumed by the population in the Southern Indian region such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.
There is an origin of the saying in Tamil: “Toothless grandfather wants muruku”. It means a person wants something they are unable to use. Since the texture of Muruku is relatively hard and rough, it is not recommended for people suffering from toothache or wearing braces to enjoy the Indian delicacy, unless it is done so with care.
